Antique Washing Stand.

I inherited this piece from my friend, C.
I loved it in it's rough worn, original state.
Flaking white and teal paint, beautiful wood, great lines.

[Jamie put on new hinges and new hardware as the doors and drawers weren't working very well. Now it's as good as new!]

But we decided to shake it up.
We wanted to use it in our daughter's room so we decided to go red.
Red. Red. Red.
Just in time for Christmas!

Balleycanoe and Other Good Things.

November 18th was 5 years, on the dot.
We took a drive to Gananoque to "get away from it all".

When we arrived at the Inn they upgraded our room to the Honeymoon suite. Jamie joked "Nothing good ever happens to us".

We had a facial/pedicure combo. Side by Side. Jamie's first.
He said he "felt like a Kardashian".
He's funny.

Later, we went to the Socialist Pig for the most amazing Mulled Cider.
That place is the bomb. Have you seen these kick-ass tables?

Balleycanoe & Co. was the next stop.
An old barn.
Three Floors of architectural antiques and a workshop full of knobs, hinges and other waiting-to-be-repurposed goods.

The owner referred to Home Depot as "Home Dump".
He said "why would anyone want everything shrink wrapped and new when you could have this?".
I think I'm in love.

When we got back to our room they had left us a bottle of champagne. The Good Stuff.
We drank the whole thing by the fire and talked about our incredible afternoon. And our incredible year.
"Another good year" we said.

We had planned to go to a French restaurant for dinner but, in the end, settled on the pub next door.
The French place just seemed too fancy.
Especially for two drunk people.

[All pics are mine except the ones of the Socialist Pig. Those belong to them!]

Yellow Tables: Inside and Out.

Our very lovely neighbour donated these beauties.
Super solid but dated.
We cleaned them up and then freshened them up with a new coat of paint and hardware from Lee Valley.
We love them inside and out!

Welcome!

Welcome to The Painted Pear! We're so glad you stopped in for a visit. I'm Jill, a naturopathic doctor and renovation-junkie. This is my husband Jamie. He's a carpenter and a teacher and he turns my ridiculous ideas into reality.

In the past year we've turned a bungalow into a 2-storey home and we are finally at the point where we get to decorate! We're finally, finally at the fun part and guess what? There's no money left!!! Of course. Because that's the way things go in renovation-land.

Luckily, we have a pretty great knack for finding inexpensive/old/broken/cast-off furniture and turning it into something special. Something we love. Something to be proud of!

I've been on the hunt for great pieces. Strong, well built, solid pieces and Jamie has been perfecting the art of spray-lacquering.

So, my latest ridiculous idea? Let's turn our adventures into a blog. You can see Jamie's work. Get ideas, give ideas and if you have anything in your home that could use a fresh, professional coat of paint (because who doesn't?), drop us a line. We're the perfect pear pair for the job!

Hope you'll come back soon!
